Summer Work
Each summer, students are asked to complete work in their chosen subjects as preparation for study in Year 12.
English Language
For some summer reading to inspire a love of linguistics, take a look at the two fantastic and accessible books below - along with an excellent podcast series to explore and enjoy.
- You're All Talk: Why we are what we speak - linguist Rob Drummond explores the enormous diversity in our spoken language to reveal extraordinary insights into how humans operate: how we perceive (and judge) other people and how we would like ourselves to be perceived.
- A Little Book of Language - With a language disappearing every two weeks and neologisms springing up almost daily, an understanding of the origins of language - and its future - has never seemed more relevant. In this charming volume, expert linguist David Crystal proves why the story of language deserves retelling.
- Podcast series Lingthusiasm - The New York Times calls it “A fascinating listen that will change the way you see everyday communications” and Buzzfeed calls it “joyously nerdy”!
French
We recommend students complete 2 tasks from each skill and also watch a French movie or TV series on Netflix over the summer.
Food
To prepare for the Eduqas Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition Diploma, you will need to focus on building foundational knowledge. This includes understanding key concepts like macronutrients, micronutrients, and food safety principles, as well as preparing for practical skills in the kitchen like planning, preparing, and evaluating dishes.
To help build your foundational knowledge, please consider investigating the following:
- Nutrients:
Review the main macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). Pay attention to fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, as well as key minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc. - Food Safety:
Understand the principles of food safety, including how to prevent foodborne illness, proper storage, and hygiene practices.
To help you gain a better understanding you can use online resources such as BBC Bitesize and NHS website. The course textbook that it recommended is the WJEC Certificate in Food Science & Nutrition by Anita Tull & Jillian Bryant, Illuminate Publishing.
